MIF OSLO 2006
Maritime Industries Forum
5-6 October 2006
Oslo, Norway
The Maritime Industries Forum MIF is run by and for Europe’s maritime industries and its annual Plenary Session took place in Oslo on 5th and 6th October 2006. Over 300 delegates were invited by the Norwegian Maritime Forum with strong support from the Norwegian Government and contributed to the debate in the Forum.
- The speeches and presentations were dealing with issues like
- Competitive European Maritime Industries
- Sustainable Growth in Waterborne Transport
- Meeting Future Challenges
- Maritime Policy Green Paper
The Commission’s position was clearly illustrated by key note speeches of Vice President and Commissioner Guenter Verheugen, Enterprise and Industry, and Commissioner Joe Borg, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs.
Guenter Verheugen was encouraging industry leaders to defend their technological leadership, build on innovation and frankly admitted that a global level playing field could not be achieved until now. He was raising the issue of the protection of Europe’s intellectual properties and the illegal transfer of know how and technology. He committed himself to less bureaucracy and simplification of rules and regulations to the benefit of the industry.
Joe Borg declared that one of the political priorities of the European Commission is to enhance Europe’s maritime dimension by developing an all-embracing and integrated Maritime Policy for the European Union. The Green Paper on Maritime Affairs is intended to launch a debate on a future Maritime Policy for the European Union that treats the oceans and seas in an integrated more holistic way.
Kelvyn Derrick, Vice President EMEC gave a presentation on the mature marine equipment manufacturing industry and the system integrators who contribute up to 70 percent of a ship’s value. The equipment industry ranks second in terms of sales, after shipping and well ahead of shipbuilding.
He confirmed the full support of EMEC for the Commission’s Directive on mutual recognition also called the “Class Directive”
which turned out to be one of the key issues being discussed both in the Forum and on the corridors. IACS and EMEC had a working lunch on 6th October on mutual recognition of rules and certificates which will lead to the forming of technical working groups to jointly elaborate harmonised standards.
The social highlight no doubt was a dinner reception hosted by the Minister of Trade and Industry in the Akershus State Castle, a unique place accessible to the public only on very rare occasions.
Those delegates who had the privilege to travel to Oslo on board Color Fantasy were enjoying the magnificent scenery of the Oslo Fjord, the rough sea in the Skagerrak and the elegant atmosphere of a cruise liner during the entire voyage.
