EMEC NETWORK LAUNCHED IN ROTTERDAM

Leading European marine equipment and system companies gathered in Rotterdam last week to hear the President of the European Marine Equipment Council, Govert Hamers, announce a major extension of the Council’s role in Brussels on behalf of the industry.

A key aspect of this development is the launch of ‘EMEC Network’ and the specially invited audience of senior executives from the leading companies in the sector were given a preview of some of the plans already underway.

Govert Hamers commented “The European marine equipment industry has a turnover of €26 billion per annum and is responsible for the direct employment of over a quarter of a million people. The recognition of this vital part of the European maritime cluster is long overdue and by encouraging greater co-operation through EMEC Network we can ensure we maintain our world leading status and technological edge.”

In presenting the new strategic direction EMEC’s Vice president, Kelvyn Derrick, said “This new strategy marks the next big step in the evolution of EMEC. The aims are simple: to make EMEC directly relevant to the needs of the equipment industry of Europe and get EMEC punching above its weight in Brussels"

The EMEC Network will involve the larger equipment companies directly and thereby strengthen the links between the industry’s leading companies through the sharing of market intelligence, providing a vehicle for greater cooperation with shipowners and shipyards, and increased collaboration in future R&D programmes through EMECRID.

Earlier that day the EMEC General Assembly agreed to substantially increase its resources to enable it to appoint a full time Secretary General in Brussels when Bernard Dognaux retires early next year. An announcement will be made in the very near future.
