The prestigious venue of this year’s joint annual reception of CESA and EMEC was the Residence Palace, located in the district of the European Union. This unique Italian style theatre with its extraordinary reception halls, stained-glass windows and art deco mouldings is ideal for receptions.
The key-note address by the Vice-President Jacques Barrot of the European Commission in charge of Transport was presented by a member of Jaques Barrot’s Cabinet, Mrs. Kerstin Jorna.

The mature, marine equipment manufacturing industry and the systems integrators have once again given a proof to be one of the four pillars of world wide shipping - ship owners, shipbuilders, classification societies and the equipment industry. EMEC is now a highly esteemed link in the maritime cluster’s supply chain, representing an innovation driven industry which provides more than 70 percent of the value of a commercial vessel.

The extremely low rate of malfunctioning of equipment “Made in Europe” is based on a long lasting partnership with shipyards and classification societies. This entrepreneurship driven industry - the majority of the companies are SMEs – guarantees the discrete handling of know-how and know-what in an environment of trust and correctness developed over a long period of time.

The annual joint reception of CESA and EMEC has become a platform for networking and cementing personal relationships with representatives of the Commission as well as accredited organisations in Brussels and the world’s leading maritime cluster.

One of the highlights of the reception was the handing over of a HOERBIGER sample explosion relief valve to Mrs. Kerstin Jorna from Vice-President Jaques Barrot’s Cabinet. This simple piece of steel serves already as a paper weight on the desks of the Rapporteur to the Parliament Luis Pascual de Grandes and Vice President Guenter Verheugen, illustrating so convincingly the content of the “Class Directive” and its major goals - further enhancement of safety, harmonisation of class rules and mutual recognition of certificates.
